Not Feeling Guilty About Day Care This Time

When I was pregnant with Lily I refused to put her in day care and go back to work.  I liked a few of the people that I worked with and missed them when I left, but my job was going nowhere and I was bored doing the same thing all the time.   There was a lot of office gossip, office games and I was getting to old for that kind of environment.   As soon as I could start my maternity leave I was gone, I didn’t even wait for Lily’s due date to be near, I left 6 weeks before she was due.  The thought of having to put Lily in day care every day and go back to the office and be miserable was not something I wanted to do, it was going to cause me extreme stress and mommy guilt.  Why suffer through the day being unhappy in my job while Lily was unhappy in day care?  I felt so guilty about putting her in day care, the thought of it made me sick to my stomach.  So I searched high and low for a way that I could stay at home with Lily and still work.  After I weeded out all the crazy jobs such as medical biller and phone sex operator I stumbled upon the world of Virtual Assistance.

When Lily was around 3 months old I saw a Patricia Beckman on Good Day Sacramento doing a story about being a Virtual Assistant and I knew I had to connect with her, she was my ticket to staying out of the office.  I contacted her right away and within a few weeks starting working with her doing various administrative tasks for her and for clients.   I worked with her for a few years and then decided to create my own Virtual Assisting firm and hire my own team of VA’s.  Today we are going strong and have a team of 8 people and we focus on Internet Marketing for Women business owners who want to make their business shine on the Internet.  We help them through Internet Marketing strategies, Social Media promotions and eCommerce solutions.  You can find out more about my company at http://SunriseVirtualServices.com

I’d been running my company for about a year and growing it really well and then BAM! I got pregnant again.  I tried to keep things going and it was good for a while because babies lay in their cribs and sit in exersaucers while you work.  But now Abigail is 16 months old and she needs other little people to interact with and an environment where she can thrive, my office is no place for her to thrive in, LOL.  I know that she watches too much TV and I felt that there has to be a better solution.

Lily will be starting a summer camp program in June so I had hoped that this would give me more time to work on my business but I would still have Abigail at home and need to tend to her needs.

Louis and I had talked about putting Abigail in day care environment but not until she was about 3 years old.  Recently things in my company were really stressing me out because the company was growing so much I couldn’t do it all, I did have things delegated out to my team but there just wasn’t enough time for me to work on much and I felt out of the loop and disconnected from my company.  There are big things  that I can do with my company and I’ve had little time to plan and execute them and that has really stressed me out because I feel like I am missing out on some golden opportunities.  I even had higher than usual blood pressure readings at a recent dr’s visit so I knew that something had to change.

At first the thought of putting Abigail in daycare made me feel guilty.  Until we visited Goddard (where she will be going and where Lily went for 2 1/2 years) and she loved it! She ran up and down the halls, she played in the classroom, she interacted with the teachers and I had to drag her out of there.  I am sure there will be some crying involved when we do those initial dropoffs but she is easily redirected so I don’t feel like there is anything to worry about.

Having her in daycare 5 days a week at even just a half time schedule will give me 20 hours per week to work and have better communication with my team, work on growing my business through in person networking, marketing and teleclasses.

So this time when I ‘go back to work’ there will be no Mommy guilt because I will be going to an office where there is no office gossip, no office politics and nothing but the ability to grow my business.

Abigail’s 1st Birthday Party

Abigail turned 1 year old on January 18th and I am finally getting around to posting about it on the blog….well I’ve been a little busy.

Here is her 1st year photo.  She is wearing the same dress as Lily did when she was 1.

Abigail LOVES Dora so we had a Dora theme birthday party and I tried really really hard not to go over the top but we all know that is hard for me to do.

The one really cool thing that I did was get a bounce house for the kids.  This wasn’t necessarily for Abigail because she just kept falling down inside of it but it was for the older cousins.  You see, we are a total of 8 grand kids and when they all get together it pretty much turns into chaos and they run around like a bunch of crazy chickens.  We are lucky enough to have an awesome neighbor who has a large family and they have a bounce house and let us borrow theirs.

The party was a lot of fun, we invited the whole family, had it at home, ordered some pizza and drank beers and watch the football playoff’s.

Here are some photos from her birthday party.

My Year In Review

Well, seriously it is almost the end of 2010 and it has been filled with a lot of ups and a lot of downs.  Maybe not ‘downs’ in the sense of tragedy, more like a few not so fun days mixed in there.  I think the theme of the year was ‘exhaustion’.

Last January we kicked off the new year by adding Abigail to our family.  I spent the first part of January trying to make her come out, but the little bugger stayed in there until the 18th and wanted to come out at 3:45 am during one of the worst and first storm of the year.  My family almost didn’t come to see me in the hospital because the storm was so bad, whatever!  I just pushed a kid out of my &$@# you better get your booty down here to see her! LOL.  I kid, no really I do.  If you want to read Abigail’s birth story and my rant about pain medication during labor you can go here – http://dawncullo.com/from-cheerio-to-soda-can-with-no-epidural-but-not-by-choice/

The first few months of the year were a complete blur.  I was trying to do it all, run my business, deal with a newborn and help Lily with her transition of being a big sister.  I felt bad for Lily, she really didn’t know what to expect.  We tried to prepare her as best we could about what to expect with a new baby in the house but I know at times she felt out of place and that makes my heart hurt a little bit for her.  We included her as much as we could in the care for Abigail such as her helping us get a diaper or choosing Abigail’s outfits for the day.  But the funny thing is that most times she just wanted to go play.

Once Abigail finally reached about 3 months things started to get better.  The weather was better and we could go for walks in her stroller and go play at the park with Lily.  As the months rolled on we started to do new things with Abigail such as solid foods and she started to scoot and crawl and her Baptism at St. Ignatius. Soon it was time for Lily to say goodbye to her Preschool life and venture on to the world of Summer Camp.

The summer time opened up a whole new world for all of us and it came in the form of a Taxi.  I got a glimpse into what Kindergarten would hold for me, the Taxi.  You can read more about this experience here  - http://dawncullo.com/taxi/

During the summer I also made a business mistake and disappointed a few people.  They know who they are so I don’t really care to mention specifics in my blog but I still feel terrible about what happened but I needed to do what was best for my family and I made a tough decision.  At the end of the summer I made a huge leap in my business and opened up a multi-VA firm.  At the time I did this I felt like I couldn’t breath, I was so busy with clients that I felt like I was juggling so much responsibility.  I am still working on growing the team and figuring it all out but having a great time knowing that I have a solid team of people working with me, I am not alone.

The fall brought us into the world of Kindergarten.  At first is was a fun new experience, now 4 months later I am ready for 1st grade to start.  I am so ‘over’ Kindergarten at this point.  The 1/2 day schedule is killing me and the crazy lack of communication from the school is driving my Type A personality to drink.  Yes, I’ve had a Rum and Diet Coke recently and it tasted awesome.  =)  You can read more about Lily’s 1st day at Kindergarten here – http://dawncullo.com/chapter/ and you can read more about my coming to terms with my past behavior in school here  – http://dawncullo.com/as-the-world-turns/

We also finally had the opportunity to upgrade our cell phones and just in time too because both of our Crackberry phones broke as our contract ended. We upgraded to Android phones and just love all the things we can do with our phones.

Finally we have arrived at the end of the year and Abigail has started walking now, she pretty much walks instead of crawls.  It is so cute to see a little 2 foot person walking around your house.  You can see a video here of her 1st steps – http://dawncullo.com/abigial-walking/

3 new Cullo grandkids (Abigial, Karina & Charlotte) have been added to the mix to bring the total of grandkids to 8, holy cow.  We had a everyone over at our house this past week for a few hours and I was pretty sure that they were all going to come rolling down the stairs or crashing through the ceiling.  Look at them…aren’t they so cute and innocent looking?  Needless to say but Abigail’s 1st birthday party will be off site this year at The Little Gym.  =)

My goals for 2011 include starting a Virtual Assistant Coaching program, adding more products to my company such as Ebooks and Audio programs for sale.  I also want to loose weight and eat better but everyone says that too and that is boring so maybe I will gain 5 pounds and eat some cake.  =)

Happy New Year to you.

By the way, the picture that is the thumbnail to this post is of me and Louis at the infamous NYE “Party Like It’s 1999″ party at George & Claudia’s house.

Working From Home Without Loosing Your Mind

How do I do it? How do I work from home with a 5 year old and an almost 1 year old without loosing my mind? Well, honestly sometimes I feel like I just want to hide in a closet and sleep but since that isn’t an option I have some tricks that I use to make sure my day runs smooth as possible and the girls still get their Mommy time. I work from home as a Virtual Assistant and I have a team of awesome people who also work with me. So how do I do it?   One day the girls will be in school all day and I will have the ‘office’ to myself but until that day arrives I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

Nap Time
Do not, I repeat DO NOT schedule a client call 20 minutes before it is nap time for your baby!  I did that once and was so embarrassed. Abigail was so fussy, all she wanted to do was cuddle up with me and take a nap. But since I couldn’t really snuggle with her at that moment all she did was scream and I had to tell the client that I needed to call them back. Instead, schedule your client calls for around when your baby wakes up from their nap. They are more than likely ready to play alone and be content without you for a about 20 minutes or so while you take the call. I have also tried to schedule client calls for when she is napping, however this can backfire on you because when they wake up they are screaming and you need to go into their room and pick them up etc and the client will hear all of that. Also, I’ve learned that Abigail falls asleep in the car everyday after I take Lily to Kindergarten and that is the best time to schedule a phone call. I just use my cell phone headset and drive home and talk to the client.

Movies
I’ve been known to turn on a movie in the afternoon to help get me through that dreaded 4:00 – 5:00 hour. That is the time when they are a little sleepy, hungry and cranky. I get them a snack, get their pillows, blankets and make a little snuggle nest for them to chill out in. Then I turn on a movie and it keeps them quiet for a little while and gives me some time to work on a project.

Movie time!

Purses & Boxes
When working at my desk or even in the playroom I get a few bags or purses and fill them with little toys. For some reason Abigail loves to unpack and repack bags and purses, this will keep her busy for about 15 minutes and sometimes that is long enough for me to do a quick email to a client or finish up a project. When she comes crawling over to me I plop down a purse in front of her and say “wow, what is in the bag” and she in good to go!  I also keep a smallish toy box in the office and near my desk upstairs.  It is filled will all kinds of random toys.  I often rotate the toys with others around the house so the box isn’t full of the same old stuff.  This is great for cleaning up the room too, just toss it all in the box and poof the room is clean.

Here is Abigail getting into one of the bags I give her to 'unpack', guess I shouldn't have left it on the table. =)

TV Time
How much TV does your kid watch? If you tell me less than an hour a day then you are lying and you have a maid, cook and nanny! There is no way on God’s green earth that your kids don’t watch more than a few hours of TV a day. I swear, those people and ‘researchers’ that say TV is bad for your kids never met Lily.  She is very smart despite her avid TV watching.  When she was a baby she watched Baby Einstein DVD’s, she spent her 1st year watching Mickey Mouse, Backyardigians & Dora. With that being said, there is nothing wrong with turning on Nick, Sprout or The Disney Channel while you get some work done around the house. I do however strongly encourage that for every hour your kid watches TV you spend time with them playing a game or reading a book or even dare I say it….go to the park.  I even have the girls help me with the laundry.  I ask Lily to sort the clothes by color and she thinks it is the best job ever! There certainly has to be a balance so be sure to not have your kid watch TV all day, just a few hours is good.

Important News
Do your kids always bug you when you are on the phone? Somehow Lily seems to have something important to tell me the second I get on the phone. To help curb this behavior I tell her that I am going to get on a call with a client (she knows what that is) and I ask her if she has any important news for me. I give her about 10 minutes to ‘think’ about it and then I get on the call with the client. Generally, she will come to me just few minutes before my call and tell me something crazy about school or one of her friends and I thank her for telling me her important news and then remind her that I am about to get on a call with a client. I would have to say that this one works very well.

Ask for Help!!
My mom lives very close to me (who suggested that?) and she is able to either take Lily to her house for an hour or so and make cookies or play in her backyard.  This is very helpful for me when Abigail is napping, because then Lily gets a “mommy break” and I get a lot of work done.  Unfortunately, this time doesn’t last all day, usually about an hour but having that hour of silence and uninterrupted time can be like winning the lotto, well almost.

Have a Satellite Office
I utilize Gmail and online project management tools so I can work from any computer, anywhere.  I have a few office spaces around the house.  The main office is downstairs in our ‘office’ and that is where most of my work stuff is kept such as books, binders and resource materials.  Then upstairs, tucked in my bedroom I have a desk for my laptop.  This desk is pretty cool because it looks like a dresser, and even has 3 drawers and desk space.  I spend a lot of my time upstairs, the play room is upstairs and so it the laundry room and the girls bedrooms.  I find that this is a good space to work in because I can work at night when Abigail is sleeping and I don’t need to run upstairs to get her when she wakes, just a short walk down the hall.  My other workspace is a small table in the play room. There are times when I need to be in the same room as the girls, normally when they are watching a movie I am in the room with them.  I set up my laptop on the little table and all is good.

Invest in an Android phone or iPhone
I used to have a Crackberry phone and thought it was fantastic, but I also got it 2 years ago.  My contract was finally up and I upgraded to a Samsung Epic phone which runs on the Android network.  Having a phone like this is super because I can work from anywhere.  With my Crackberry I was able to get my email and get on the Internet but with an Android phone, it is a a whole new ballgame.  The network is so much faster now, especially with 4G and the ability to connect to WiFi networks.  I can log into my blog or even clients sites and make changes as needed.  I am also able to connect to my project management system, Basecamp, as well as my invoicing tool Freshbooks.  Just the other day while out to dinner with the family I was able to draft up an invoice and send it off to the client and was paid within minutes!

Don’t Do It Alone
Lastly, I have to advise any Virtual Assistant to develop a team of people to help you out. It was the best thing that I did to save my sanity. I was really hesitant to do it at first because I thought that I wouldn’t make any money if I was ‘farming’ out all of the work. However, what I found is that the clients that I already have really welcomed the idea of being able to take advantage of more services that I had to offer and ended up purchasing more hours from my company. So not only was I able to continue to work on their project, but I was able to give out work to my team as well.

My newest team member, Abigail. Her skills include jabber talk to monsters on Sesame Street

Those are my basic tips, and I have even more tips which I will be sharing in an upcoming book that will be released in January. The tips include more in depth working at home information and how to keep up on your house work, task list and setting goals.  You can check out my website for more information about my team and my company http://sunrisevirtualservices.com/

Abigial Is Walking

December 11, 2011 we had the entire family over for a party and she decided that this would be the perfect time to take her first steps.  This picture was taken right after she took a step.  Everyone was cheering her on.  Since then she has take at least 5-8 steps in a row and then decides  to crawl.

Here is a video of her walking a few hours after this photo was taken.

Fast forward to today (December 22, 2010) and she now crawls onto anything she can.  I was doing laundry and Lily yells “Mom, get in here quick!” I rush into the play room and find this.

Which quickly turned into this

Holy cow!  We really have a fearless little adventurer on our hands.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from Louis, Lily (5), Dawn, Abigail (11 months) and Roxy Cat.

Cullo Holiday

Well, here we are again…another Christmas season and personally since we have been married (for 10 years now) each Christmas has been crazy.  I look forward to the days when I can relax and have a stress-free holiday, but not sure that will ever happen.  LOL.  I think that with the fast paced life that I lead now it doesn’t leave much time for the holiday planning and enjoyment that I would like.  When the girls get older and are teenagers my life (hopefully) wont be as crazy and I can take time to slow down and enjoy the holiday season, but when that time comes I am pretty sure I will be longing for the days when they were babies.  I suppose the lesson here is to just enjoy the holiday no matter how crazy it may be.

Happy Thanksgiving…ok it’s past so Happy Almost Christmas

We had a fantastic Thanksgiving, I hope you did as well. We hosted Thanksgiving at our house this year and had Lou’s sister Michel and her family over as well as both sets of our parents and my grandmother. The house was buzzing with people and the smell of turkey in the oven was awesome.

I decided to take the week off, but still checked in on my email to make sure none of my clients had any emergencies. It was really nice to be ‘unplugged’ for a few days. Ok, I do confess that I updated my work website, but that was fun. It sure was hard to get back to work on CyberMonday. Thank goodness I have a system in place to keep track of my clients project using Basecamp. It is an nifty project management online application that helps me to organize all of my clients ‘stuff’ so when I had to jump back into work today it didn’t hurt as much. =)

Here are some pictures from our Thanksgiving.

Fracture Me

Fracture Me - Back

This is the back of the frame.

This blog post is in follow-up to a previous posting about Fracture Me http://dawncullo.com/fracture-is-the-new-picture-frame/

I had the opportunity to order a print through Fracture Me and loved it.  The process is simple, it just involves uploading a photo to their site and selecting the size of the finished print.  You can even add a border around the image and that will be printed as part of the picture.  I opted for the full image, no border and was thrilled with the results.  Shipping time was good, I didn’t have to wait very long from the time I ordered the product for it to arrive. Speaking of shipping, the photograph was shipped in a very sturdy box and it was easy to open as well.

Once I unpacked the photo I had the hard task of having to decide where to put it.  It did look odd placed next to other images in frames.   The really cool thing is that if you wanted to hang these side by side or make a pattern of some type you could do that.

The photo comes with a screw that you just twist into the wall and hang your image on.  There is a cut out on the back of the image where you hang it on the screw and it can be hung the portrait or landscape orientation.

Once hung on the wall the image is amazing, so clear and so real.  Just make sure you rub off any fingerprint marks left behind from handling the photo while you were unpacking it.

I think that Fracture Me is a great gift to give, especially for the Holidays or for that new grandparent in your life.  The prices are very affordable starting at $8 for a 5 x 7. The size that I have is an 8 x 10 and that only cost $12.  I think that is a great price for a gift and this one will not be  shoved in the closet or re-gifted!

Here are some photos of the image.  See how thin it is?

No audio on this video, just wanted to show how thin the photo is. Be sure to watch it in HD. =)

I received a free Fracture frame for review. The thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.  You can learn more about Fracture at http://www.fractureme.com

Taxi Please

Lily is starting Kindergarten at the end of August and we thought it would be a good idea for her to attend Summer School at her new school so that she could get used to the environment.  We are almost done with the program and she is doing great, but I am the one who has been in an adjustment period.

I had no idea how hard this would be to drop her off and pick her up from school.  At her new school they give every parent a security badge to wear once they have been ‘cleared’ by the office to be on campus.  The badge is actually a yellow card that reads “Taxi Driver”.  On the first day that I got my badge, I thought it was so cute, now I hate it because yes it reminds me that I am fricken Taxi Driver.

Every day I have had to drive her to school by a specific time, not like in Preschool where we could just come and go as we pleased.  No, not when you are in real school, you’ve got to be on time people!  Then I have to occupy myself for 2 hours with Abigail and then it is time to pick Lily up again from school.  My entire morning and early afternoon is built around being her taxi, it is crazy.

There is an afternoon session that she doesn’t stay for and they ring a bell,  holy cow if I am late picking her up I am pretty sure that she would go into category 5 hurricane mode. So every day I get there early and wait….tap tap tap my fingers, check my work email on my phone and get on facebook mobile while Abigail sleeps in the car and I wait for the perfect time to go into the school and pick Lily up…..wait did I mention that I have to actually get out of my car, sign her ‘out’ in the office walk to her classroom and get her?  Oh My GOSH, this is madness and tons of fun when I have to wake up Abigail to do it.

I am almost sad in a way that this is what the next year is going to be  like, my entire days filled with dropping her off and picking her up from school.  Well, at least when she starts Kindergarten she will be in the afternoon class from noon  – 3:00 and this means that we don’t need to rush out of the house or deal with morning traffic.  I will also be able to do the ‘drive through’ lane to pick her up, I don’t need to get myself or Abigail out of the car to pick her up.

So, we are in her last week of Kindercamp and I am really looking forward to it being over, it was a great experience for both of us but dang it I am so exhausted.

First Feeding

Abigail had her 4 month check up and did very well, she weighs only slightly more than Lily did at this age, 14 pounds. Her doctor gave us the green light to start to introduce foods such as rice cereal and pureed foods. Right after we left the doctors office we zoomed over to walgreens and picked up some food for Abigail. When we sit down for a meal we put Abigail in her high chair and she just stares at us and makes a chewing motion with her mouth. So now Lily and I were super excited to be able to feed Abigail food.

Abigail's First Feeding of Banana's

We started with bananas and after a while she liked them. But then the next day she had a bad reaction to her vaccinations so we stuck with formula. When she was feeling better we gave her some rice cereal, just 2 oz but she loved it. I think however she may have been confused because it tasted like formula and I was feeding it to her with a spoon. I think she wanted it in the bottle, not from the spoon.

After a bib change Lily even helped out and feed her a few scoops of bananas.

Lily feeding Abigail bananas

Even though I have been through all this baby stuff before, my memory is terrible and I couldn’t recall how much to feed her. Luckily, Gerber has a great website with a lot of info for forgetful mommies like me.

Here is a link to their Nutrition Guide for Supported Sitters, but they have others as well on their site. I especially like the menu planner available to help you keep your babies nutritional needs on track.  With a few clicks you can customize a menu for your baby.  You can even print it out and tack it on your fridge AND you can print out a shopping list, how type “A” is that.

Here are a few pictures from the Lily Collection.

Giraffes

Vulli Sophie the Giraffe TeetherI did it, I finally broke down and bought one of those crazy Giraffe teethers for Abigail.  I have seen them in just about every parenting magazine and heard from other moms about them, most recently my next door neighbor has one for her son who is just a few months older than Abigail.

When I pulled it out of the box I was shocked because I seriously thought that this was going to be a hard rubber type of toy but it is not.  Sophie, yes she has a name, is made from a soft flexible rubber that smells so darn awesome, like vanilla.  I took it out of the box and handed it to Abigail and it was like she already knew what to do with it, she shoved it right in her mouth.  Sophie also has a cute squeaker in her tummy that sounds like a dog toy.

You can view a video about how she is made…mostly by hand. – the stress test is the best part of the video !!

But what is all the craze about?  Why do babies love this toy?

•Sight:

At the age of 3 months, a baby’s eyesight is still limited and he can only make out high contrasts. The Dark and contrasting attention-catching spots all over Sophie the Giraffe’s body provide visual stimulation and she soon becomes a familiar and reassuring object for baby.

•Hearing:

Sophie’s the Giraffe squeaker keeps baby amused and stimulates his hearing. To begin with, the funny sound Sophie makes when she is squeezed helps to stimulate baby’s hearing, and then later, helps him to understand the link between cause and effect.

•Taste:

A Sophie the Giraffe is made of 100% natural rubber and food paint, and is completely safe to chew, just like a feeding bottle teat. Her soft texture and numerous chewable parts (ears, horns, legs), make her perfect for soothing baby’s sore gums during teething.

•Touch:

Touch is the first means a baby has of communicating with the outside world. Sophie the Giraffe’s soft feel, like baby’s mother’s skin, stimulates physiological and emotional response that soothe baby and promote healthy growth and well-being..

•Smell:

The singular scent of natural rubber from the Hevea tree makes Sophie the Giraffe very special and easy for your child to identify amid all his other toys.

•Easy to grip:

Sophie the Giraffe’s shape and 18 cm (7 inches) size are perfect for baby’s small hands. She is very light, and her long legs and neck are easy for baby to grip, even from his earliest days.

Still the same, even after more than 46 years…
She hasn’t dated in the slightest..

More than 30 million Sophies have been sold…

How to get one

Ok, so now you want one for your baby, well here is how you can get one. If you live in the Sacramento area you can head down to Goores, that is where I got mine or you can order one from Amazon

In closing, unfortunately when I think of Giraffes all I can think about is the most awesomest Saturday Night Live sketch about GIRAFFES.

The Picture People – 05/03/10

We finally got picture of the girls done. This will be good practice for our family photo shoot in September

Spit Up Happens

In 2005 if I had a day like I had today I am pretty sure I would be crying in a corner somewhere in my house because I felt like I had failed at being a mommy.  Back then, as a first time parent my world was spinning when it came to taking care of a newborn.  I thought I knew what I was doing because I read all those parenting books.  Lily was a difficult baby, not the kind you want to have as a first time parent.  I should have never wasted my time reading any of those parenting books because Lily broke the mold, and still does.

Today, I am older and wiser or as my OBGYN calls it ‘pre-menopausal’.  Well, leave it to my Gay OBGYN to call it like he sees it.  Anyway, back to today.  I just couldn’t get Abby to take a nap today and I pulled out all the mommy tricks but nothing was working. I was pretty frustrated today but I took it all in stride and just kept pressing on with my day.  She did fall asleep in the car, but as soon as I got to where I was going she would wake up, lovely.  The one thing that I did notice today is that she had a lot more spit up than normal and she wanted to chew on her thumbs more than normal.

This picture was taken by Lily just after breakfast and at the moment she took the picture I felt something warm on my leg….and it was Spit Up.  I should have gotten the clue that this is how my day was going to be.  Later in the day she even spit up down my back and it landed on the carpet at The Little Gym, awesome.  I tried to get her down for a nap the entire afternoon and she would fall asleep but then wake up a few minutes later.  That tells me that something is bothering her and I think that she is going through a growth spurt as she will be 3 months old in a few days.

When kids grow it actually hurts in their limbs and it can be quite bothersome, and I learned that from Lily.  When she was little there were times when she was a monster, and I am not exaggerating about that at all.  She was great birth control for us for several years.  Basically, she would be very difficult and then a few days later she would have a new tooth or we would measure her and she would be 1/2 inch taller.  When she got old enough to tell us what was bothering her, she told me that her arms and legs hurt and we would figure out that she was growing.  So knowing this vital information helped me today and I never ended up crying in a corner somewhere in my house because I know that Abby is just growing and I have to help her through it and give her extra love and some Motrin.

Easter Madness

Abbity Rabbity

Ok, well it wasn’t really madness but I thought that it was going to be.  Now having two young kids makes everything take longer and just seem like more of a pain in the booty.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my girls but holy cow now we have even more crap to lug around, especially on a Holiday visit to the in-laws.

However, this Easter I was pleasantly surprised, it went very smooth….omg did I say that?  I could not believe how awesome my Easter was.

Lily was so well behaved and I was so proud of her as she didn’t gather ALL of the Easter eggs during the hunt at Grandma’s, she left some for her younger cousins.  Abby was the best baby EVER!  She cried when she wanted to be fed, took naps when she was tired and even did some socializing.  I just couldn’t believe how un-stressed I was….it was a very nice feeling.

However, the days before Easter were a bit stressful for me.  You see, I am a very organized gal…ok I used to be before I had the girls.  Normally, I would have had all of my Easter stuff done at least the weekend if not a few days before.  This time, I didn’t start until Friday and I was still putting things together on Saturday night, which drove me a bit batty.  The whole time I was putting Lily’s Easter basket together I was so sure she was going to come bounding down the stair and ruin the surprise, but she didn’t and I stressed for no reason.  She slept through the night, unlike me though.  I was up every two hours with Abby and then up at 6:30 when Lily woke up to see what the Easter Bunny brought.  *sigh*  So we started our day pretty early and I had a headache the entire day, but it was still a good day.

Super Bowl Family

We celebrated Super Bowl Sunday by putting on our Raider gear and making some yummy snack foods.  We really like Franks Red Hot sauce so Louis made his “Hot Nuggets”.  It is simple to make, just dice up some chicken and bread it then fry it up in a pan.  In another pan melt butter and add Frank’s Red Hot Sauce and mix well.  When the chicken is done place it in a serving bowl and pour the sauce over the chicken and turn to coat.  Serve with blue cheese dressing or buttermilk dressing.

Sisters Art

Before Abigail was born Lily drew many pictures with baby Abigail in them, as well as drawings with our whole family.  She even wrote “Abby” many times on her drawings, it was almost like she was obsessed with her.  Once I got home from the hospital with Abigail I noticed something different about Lily, she had changed.  The change wasn’t necessarily bad, it was just that she was acting different.  She was almost over acting her enthusiasm for Abigail and acting somewhat ‘spazy’.  Her normal actions were louder and bigger and just plain ol’ goofy.  She also didn’t create any artwork with Abigail in it.

I think she was almost uncomfortable having Abigail around.  We had to help Lily understand how to interact with a baby by teaching her things such as using your ‘indoor voice’ and using a gentle touch when playing with her.  Perhaps all these new instructions made her feel a bit out of place in her own home and I can see why many children become jealous of the new baby in the house.  Louis has taken some time off of work so that he can spend time with Lily and Abigail and we have made it a point to do special things with Lily as well.  We also make sure that she is involved and helps us with the baby by getting a diaper, picking out her clothes or helping to feed her.  Lily’s new behavior has tapered off and she is settling back into her own skin.  I know that she is feeling better about having Abigail around because when she came home from Preschool on Wednesday she gave me a new piece of artwork.

From Cheerio to Soda Can with No Epidural, But Not By Choice

Update: 05/22/10
Since first writing this article on January 28, 2010 I have seen that my blog post has been getting a lot of views.  My guess is that you have landed here because you have done a Google search about Epidurals or are curious about pain during labor.  The original blog post was mainly about my entire labor experience, not just the pain involved.  Therefore I will give you my candid (of course) view on labor pain as I recall doing the same internet research when I was pregnant with my first daughter in 2005.

The pain is so intense you will not be able to stand it, seriously.  When you don’t have the epidural each contraction is like torture, and it doesn’t stop.  It is like you have been involved in a car accident and have been seriously injured and there is no one there to help you.    TV shows and movies, well most of them anyway, do not…and I repeat DO NOT depict labor and the pain involved correctly.  There is not one ‘breathing’ technique or song that will keep your mind off of the pain, that is a load of bullshit!  The pain is like someone is cutting you with a knife, do you think that you can sing a verse of “She’ll be coming round the mountain” if someone was slicing you up with a knife?  Didn’t think so. The worst pain will be in your vagina when the head starts to crown, there is no pain medication for that part.  The best thing to do is to push as hard as you can to get your baby out so that it ends quicker, that is the only way to get the pain to stop.

With that in mind, (this is just my opinion but) get the Epidural, don’t make this process harder on yourself than it really needs.  I passed out twice during labor while I waiting for the epidural and it was horrible.  The only thing I could do was attempt to breathe through it and pray, yes I prayed during labor.  Nobody is going to think you are less of a woman because you asked for the pain medication and nobody is going to give you a gold medal for doing it without the pain medication.  In the end, all you will have is your baby and being a parent is hard enough and can be shitty at times.  The only medication for that is alcohol but you can’t drink that until you stop nursing.  =)

Below is the original blog posting from January 28, 2010

During my pregnancy with Abigail I have always been concerned with the care for Lily (my 4 year old) during labor and I really hoped that my labor would be quick.  Now I know to be careful what you wish for.

We had lined up various family members to take care of her depending upon the time of day I went into labor, the one time I didn’t want to go into labor was in the middle of the night.  However, my body had other ideas.  I woke up at 3:15 am on Monday morning January 18th with a really bad Braxton Hicks, turns out this was the real thing and I had lost my mucus plug.  I woke up Louis and said, make some coffee and get ready because we are going to the hospital!  I timed my contractions and they were not consistent, some were 4 minutes apart and others were 10 minutes apart.  Most of them I could walk around through them but there were a few where I could not walk or talk during them.  We called Labor and Delivery and they said to come in when they are 3-5 minutes apart.

My mom was the one who was going to watch Lilly should I go into labor in the middle of the night, so I gave her a call and woke her up at 4:45 and asked her to come over by 6:30.  But the contractions kept coming harder and faster so I called her back a few minutes later and asked her to come over ASAP!  We woke up Lily and took off for the hospital.

It was a holiday (Martin Luther King, Jr day) so freeway traffic was pretty light, however Louis felt the need to get in the #3 lane and drive the speed limit as I am screaming through each contraction.  I yelled at him, get in the Fast Lane and gun it or we are having this kid in the car.  I could feel that something was not right, these contractions were coming too fast and hurt more with each one.  When we finally arrived at UC Davis Medical Center we had to walk while I was having contractions through the entire hospital and into the next wing, yes I said walk to Labor and Delivery and it was the longest walk ever!

I got into the triage section where they evaluate your situation and decide if they are going to admit you to a room, it didn’t take them too long to decide to admit me and start me on antibiotics as I have Group B Strep and need to have 4 hours of antibiotics prior to delivery.  They checked my cervix and I was at 3 centimeters, I had gone from zero to three centimeters on my own in 3 hours.  They also ordered the epidural as I walked (yet again) to my labor room.

They gave me some wussy pain medication while I waited for the epidural but it didn’t really help, these contractions were getting worse and coming every 2 minutes.  It was the worst pain I have ever felt in mt life, this must be what torture was like.  For the next 2 hours I screamed, prayed and begged for my epidural and wondered why this was happening to me, why was I waiting so long for the epidural? Remember, it was a holiday and there was ONE epidural fairy wandering labor and delivery and I was 3rd in line for an epidural.  WHAT??  By 9am my labor nurse told me that I might have to give birth without an epidural, and that put me even more over the edge, I flipped out.  At one point I even passed out from the intense pain and Louis and the nurses had to wake me up and even keep from from passing out another three times.

When the anesthesiologist finally arrived a bit after 9 AM I had to fill out paperwork (are you kidding me!) and she had to review the risks of having an epidural, PLEASE just give it to me already.  I was having contractions every two minutes and during the epidural process I had to remain perfectly still, that was the worst part of labor.  I vividly recall staring at a piece of lint on Louis’ shirt and gritting my teeth while I held his hands and cried from the pain.  The attending Anesthesiologist and my labor nurse Kimmi each held me up and I started to pass out again from the pain and they held me up while the resident anesthesiologist administered the epidural.

Finally, I could feel relief with the epidural and now I could make it through the contractions while just doing my breathing exercises, which up to this point were pretty useless.  The nurse checked my cervix and I was dilated to 8 centimeters, this had done all with out the epidural.  The bad news is I have to wait another 2 hours to give birth because the antibiotics have to be in my system for 4 hours prior to giving birth and they were only in my system for 2 hours now.  During the next to hours I could not push and try to remain calm as to not go into labor.  If I were to go into labor the effects of the Group B Strep could be life threatening to Abigail.  We realized that the camera was still in the car so Louis ran to get it, all the way back through the hospital and out to the car.

11:00 AM finally came and my nurse checked my cervix, I was now at 9 centimeters and since I had the antibiotics in my system for 4 hours they could now break my water.  As soon as they broke my water I could feel Abigail slip down into the birth canal and I knew that I was ready to push my little Abigail out.  The nurse called in the delivery team and I went to work pushing through the contractions.  In my previous pregnancy with Lily I pushed for over 2 hours so I assumed this time would be the same, wrong.  I pushed for maybe 30 minutes and about 10 times when she was born.  The cord was wrapped around her neck and she was purple, but she was doing fine once they got her untangled and checked her out.  I sneezed and then my placenta poped out and it took them longer to repair my 2nd degree tear than to give birth.

All in all it was a quick delivery and could have been quicker if it wasn’t for the Group B Strep.  I was in labor for a total of  7 hours and pushed for 30 minutes.

I can’t really blame anyone for the lack of getting my epidural sooner, if I hadn’t progressed so quickly I would have been ok waiting for the epidural, of course maybe having more than one anesthesiologist on staff would have been nice, but oh well.

I feel that I can now do anything, after getting though this labor process I feel like a stronger woman and my recovery has also been awesome too! I am a bit sleep deprived but what would life with a newborn be like if you got sleep?

Life With Abigail

It has been a week since Abigail joined our happy little family and life has been good.  She is a great eater, sleeper and Lily loves to help out by getting a diaper or picking out her clothes.  We actually went out to dinner at Jacks Urban Eats for a celebratory Steak Salad and some Urban Fries and she did great.  We look forward to having many fun adventures with her and will share them on our Blog.

This is a photo of Lily and Abigail, the first time Lily got to hold her.

Baby Abigail’s New Due Date

We had our 40 week appointment today and looks like we will have to wait until next week for her to be born.  My doctor said that my body is ‘closed up tight’ and I am not a candidate for induction and the due date could just be wrong.  He said that he will not let me go beyond 41 1/2 weeks which is next weekend, which gives us a new due date of around January 23rd.

So we wait….and have sex because he said that could help soft the cervix and start labor sooner.  Also, I was hoping that he would at least strip my membranes today however, I learned that because I am Group B positive it could become a problem and cause an infection.  I am having Braxton Hicks contractions so hopefully these will turn into more productive contractions this week.

Due Date, Smooe Date

When I found out I was pregnant in May I headed figured out my due date based upon my LMP and came up with a due date of January 21st.  However, once I visited the doctor he told me that it was going to be January 7th, what?  Well, according to them all women are apparently on the same 28 day cycle…yeah right!  My cycles are 41 days people and I can totally prove it!!  But, he would not listen as we all know how ‘godly’ some doctors can be.  So we moved along in the pregnancy and have been given 3 different due dates during the ultrasounds that we have had.  All three were more towards the end of January, but my doctor always just stuck with January 14th.  Guess what? Today is January 13th and I am still pregnant.

I know that due dates are just an estimate but darn it, I thought I would of had this little angel by now.  I have prepared myself and my family so much for this day.  My house is cleaned, laundry done, Lily’s child care for the event (somewhat) planned and now we need to wait another week.

I was hoping that he would at least strip my membranes today however, I learned that because I am Group B positive it could become a problem and cause an infection.

I am still having Braxton Hicks contractions and totally uncomfortable but things could be worse, right?  Today was my 40 week appointment and after my exam the doctor indicated that I was not going to be induced today and I was pretty darn bummed.  However, he did send me over to Labor & Delivery to have them check my amniotic fluid levels.  With my first pregnancy 4 years ago at 40 weeks my fluid was 25% low and so I was induced.  However, this time everything check out fine.  I was hooked up to a fetal monitor and Baby Abigail did great through the two contractions that I had.  The Nurse Practitioner did the ultrasound and found that my amniotic fluid levels were just fine and she even printed a picture of Abigail so we got to see her sweet face today.   The nurse even ordered lunch for me (I didn’t have to ask for it) so I got a free meal and I found out that there is Free WiFi at the hospital, cool.

So, yes it is annoying that I am still pregnant but at least we know that everything is ok and according to me my due date is January 21st.  I’ve also always said that I wanted her birthday to be as far away from Christmas as possible, really who wants their birthday right after Christmas anyway.

The one piece of advice that we did get from my doctor and the Nurse Practitioner was to have sex.  They said that semen contains prostaglandins which can stimulate contractions.  So, guess what we will be doing for the next week?

And by the way, my hospital bag has been in my car for over a week now!  Guess it is safe to take it out now.

Waiting To Get This Party Started

I had my doctor’s appointment last week and found that my ‘baby door’ is shut tight!  I am not due until January 14th so really there isn’t too much of a rush except that my doctor seems to think that Abigail is going to be a big baby and he would like for things to get moving.  I feel though that if she is doing well in my tummy (no stress to her) then that is where she can stay until the due date.  Lily was only a few days over due and she was 7 pounds, no biggie right?  So, I declined my doctors offer to have my membranes stripped and we left the office hoping to get things started on our own.  On the way home I had numerous erratic contractions known as Braxton Hicks contractions and this gave me hope that with our own methods I would be in labor in no time.

That was a few days ago and here I sit, in my office writing this blog and still no baby.  Louis is right….the doctor is the professional and I should have listen to him and had my membranes stripped in the office.  We have endured hours and miles of walking, foot massaging and even more walking.  Prior to my doctors appointment I was walking at Walmart, Target, Costco etc and having a really hard time getting through it because there was so much pressure in my cervix.  So after leaving the doctor’s office I was confident that Louis and I would need to just give it ‘one good walk’ around the mall a few times and wham things would naturally progress.  I was so confident in fact that Louis is already taken time off of work because we thought we would be in labor and have Abigail by now.  Wrong.

We strapped on our tennis shoes on Thursday night and walked at the Arden Fair Mall. We walked that darn thing 6 times which resulted in 3 miles and all I got was a blister and a swollen right foot.  We managed to sneak in some spicy Thai food and a piece or two of See’s candy (dark chocolate vanilla butter cream and a picked up a small gift for Lily from the Hello Kitty store to give to her when she visits me and Abigail in the hospital.  I had 1 Braxton Hicks contraction the entire time.

Ok, so next day we try the walking thing again, but this time it is complicated by the fact that Lily has decided that she is doesn’t want to go to preschool and takes normal than longer to get her booty into gear and we are late for school.  I couldn’t walk at the mall as we had planned so we just walked around Target and after about 10 laps we ended up doing some grocery shopping.  I even fired up my Wii and did some Yoga with my Wii Fit and some dancing on EA Active Sports.

Later that evening we ended up at the Roseville Galleria for some more walking but by this point I was so sore from walking I wasn’t sure it was a good idea.  We walked a little bit, but not as much as we should have.  It was rather difficult to do this with a 4 year old so we just gave up and at dinner and did some shopping.  I did however get some great deals on bath products from Lush and Lily scored on some soap from there too.  We came home and I took a nice warm bath with my new bath products and just relaxed.

Now, here is it Saturday and I have a sore throat, blisters, shin splints and I am exhausted.  I’ve had a few more Braxton Hicks, but nothing major.  This really wasn’t the ‘end game’ I had in mind.  By now, I had hoped to have Abigail in my arms and possibly even home by now.  But, I know that she will be here soon and I just need to enjoy the time we have together and relax because soon this house is going to be a loud crazy mad house and I will be longing for these quite lazy days.

Abigail’s Nursery & Shower

We have finished with Abigails room, now we just need her in it!  A few more weeks and she will be popping out!  We used some of Lily’s nursery items such as her crib, dresser and some of her decorations.  We kept the Bunny theme that we used in Lily’s nursery as well.

My mom threw me a Baby shower on December 5th and I had a great time with all my friends and family.  Lily even got some great things from some of the guests.  She got a big sister shirt, and a cute little black & white stuffed kitty and one that she can give to Abigial.

Nesting

nestI can’t belive that I am doing it again, I am nesting.  I don’t realize that I am doing it until I am well into scrubbing the bathroom tile with a toothbrush.  It is amazing how much you can get done when you are 8 months pregnant!  I keep crossing things off my list and I am looking for more things to do.  My house certianly isn’t perfect at the moment and in fact I am looking at way too much dust sitting on my computer monitor….guess I need to do some swiffering in my office today.  =)

25 Week Ultrasound

I had to go back for a follow-up ultra sound a few days ago because at the 20 week ultrasound they were unable to get good image of her heart.  This time, there was no problem as they were able to get the images right away.  The tech was able to spend some extra time with me and sent me home with some great shots.

Oh Vay, Braxton Hicks

Any pregnant lady will tell you that they have experienced Braxton Hicks contractions during their pregnancy.  These are basically felt anytime after the 1st Trimester and I am approaching 6 months pregnant which is my 2nd Trimester.  They are your bodies way of getting ready for labor, it is like warming up for the event.  They are not painful, just annoying.  dumbbellWhen I was pregnant with Lily I didn’t really feel these until much later in the pregnancy and even then at times I thought it was her kicking me.  Now, I can tell the difference between Abigail kicking me and a Braxton Hicks contraction.

The Braxton Hicks that I am feeling happen pretty much all day long, and are seriously starting to annoy me, but I know that this is part of pregnancy.  They basically feel like a muscle spasm in a specific spot for about 2 minutes.  Then they move onto another spot and continue all day long.  Sometimes they can go every 8 minutes, sometimes only once an hour.  When I feel Abigail move it is more of a kick or punch one time in the lower belly and that is it.

They do become annoying because I sit at my desk and work and they can become uncomfortable and make it hard to concentrate on work.  It is like having someone come up and kick you in your stomach or ‘down there’ and then you feel the muscle spasm for a few minutes.  Oh well, only 17 more weeks of this and then I will be in intense pain which will result in the birth of a baby.

We are having a girl baby.

IMG_0003

The picture is a little fuzzy but the ultrasound tech showed me more images on the screen and clearly pointed out the female parts!  Now I don’t have to go and sell all my clothes at Once Upon a Child and we can finally talk about names and we can start decorating.  Can you tell I am excited?

Lily was with us during the Ultrasound and afterwards she called Nona and her Aunties to tell them the news.  She was rather excited as well, until the new baby starts playing with her My Little Ponies and Barbies!

Gender Verification Is Just Around The Corner

I am getting nervous, mainly because I am just a big ol’ control freak and what happens during pregnancy is one of these things that you can’t control.  Even worse, you can’t control the gender of your child.  Having to wait 5 months to find out the gender of our  baby is making me a little nuts.  I could go and have an ultrasound done at one of those fancy 3D places and pay a few bucks to find out before my scheduled appointment on Tuesday but it just isn’t in the budget at the moment.  We will stick with the one that will be paid by the insurance.  On Tuesday (August 25th) at 9:00 am we will be finding out the gender of the baby.

This means that I will either be selling a ton of girl clothes at Once Upon A Child or unpacking it all in the baby’s room and we can start playing the name game. We have a few names picked out for each gender but Lou doesn’t really want to talk about the names until we can only talk about 1/2 of them.  Honestly, it doesn’t matter if we have a boy or another girl but deep down inside I really think it is a girl.

crochet hookers

My mom is poised and ready with her crochet hooks and waiting to find out which colors she can use to make the baby a blanket. Lord knows she made us enough when Lily was born, but she feels the new baby needs their own blankets too.

So I’ve been a little cranky, a little anxious and I have a feeling that this weekend is going to drag on.  I guess I will just have to keep my self busy so that the time flies by and Tuesday gets here really soon.

I’ve also been falling into the Pregnancy Brain syndrome.  I recall that the first time I was pregnant I had really bad Pregnancy Brain and had the worst memory.  Normally I have a great memory and can remember lots of annoying and trivial things like Disney Trivia and my job! But now, I am forgetting so many things and it make me so mad because I honestly feel stupid.  Even Lily has noticed, recently she told me “Mom, you are forgetting stuff….a lot”.  Ahh, 3 year olds, tell it like it is.  I forgot if she wanted Milk or Juice and seriously just stood there in the kitchen, thinking really hard but it just never came to me.  Oh well, hopefully once I pop out this new Cullo my memory will come back….maybe.

Reminder, your pregnant

Reminder

The first time I was pregnant in 2005 I worked as an administrative assistant in the traditional 9-5 office job.  I sat on my booty all day long in an office chair and had all day to think about my pregnancy, baby names and my baby registry.  I was always aware that I was pregnant because all I did was sit around and think about it, talk about it with my co-workers for months.

Now, I have an almost 4 year old to take care of and I work at home.  While working at home has been the best solution for our family it takes a lot of discipline.   It is important to stick to a work schedule and mine consists of 3 hours of work per day, 1 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon and 1 at night.  I love to have a clean house and that is nearly impossible with 2 cats, Lily and Louis!  I keep it as clean as I can and most weeks the laundry does pile up, oh well.  Thank goodness we have a play area upstairs where Lily’s toys can be messy and that is a.o.k.  Unlike my previous pregnancy I don’t sit around all day as I am always on the go running errands, going on play dates or completing chores. I would love to have Lily in preschool 5 days a week, a maid and a Gardner, window washer, carpet cleaner and a baby sitter but that just isn’t in our plan.

There are many days where I have to remind myself that I am pregnant.  I get a tired towards the end of the day, around 4:oo pm and I feel like I could sleep for days.  Some weekend days I acutally am so tired that I just pass out for hours and it is great!  I also am uber hungry, now that I have my appetitie back I can eat just about anything.  So when my body gets tired and hungry I have to stop and say “slow down, remember you are pregnant”.

Second Trimester, Ahh Food.

During my first trimester I had the worst morning sickness, it was pretty similar to what I experienced with Lily during my first pregnancy.  I even got the stomach flu towards the end of the first trimester as I did with Lily.  Some people claim that when you experience really bad morning sickness that you are having a girl, but I think I am just really sensitive to pregnancy hormones.  During the first trimester I actually lost at least 8 pounds.  Not only was I having terrible morning sickness, but everything tasted horrible to me.  I could not (and still can’t) eat something with sugar in it because it leaves a horrible after taste in my mouth.  I took a sip of Lemonade and it tasted like I licked a hot sidewalk.  Well, I guess this is just my baby telling me to eat right, dont’ eat junk food!  However, I can’t get enough of bubble gum and sour candy like Now and Laters.  During my first trimester I lived off of protein shakes and gum, awesome!

dcoke03Now that the second trimester is in full swing I feel so much better.  I still can’t stand the taste of food with sugar, like bread and milk but at least my appetite is back.  I was so hungry today, I am pretty sure that the baby is doubling in size because I am ready to drive to Cattlemen’s Steak House and order me up a big o’l steak and a diet coke.

My energy level has returned to semi-normal status.  At the end of every day I am pretty much exhausted because I am such a busy gal, I just try and do too much and get tuckered out.

We have started to get the Nursery ready.  I have kept all of Lily’s clothes organized and packed up in vacuum bags, ready to be unpacked should we find out that we are having a girl.  If we find out that we are having a boy then I guess I am making a trip to Once Upon a Child and Goodwill.  I was grumpy the other day and once I started to unpack all the cute baby things for the room I couldn’t help but be in a better mood.
