I am so jazzed to be selling Avon products because I get to play with makeup and check out new products before they are available to the public.  For a few weeks now I have been playing with Avon’s new line of mineral makeup.  I am familiar with mineral makeup as I have been a user of bareMinerals for about 3 years now and love the stuff and my hearts pounds faster when I pass the bareMinerals store in the mall.  However, the price of their products are a tad high and I’ve had to cut back my spending so I haven’t been using it as much so I can save the product for when I really need it.

Now, Avon has developed their own line of mineral makeup called Smooth Minerals and I was so thrilled to be able to play with it and compare it to bareMinerals.  bareMinerals has been around for years and has built great complimentary products to their makeup line and therefore they have a huge line of products to choose from.  The Avon mineral makeup is just getting started so they have just the basics going on right now but enough to get you started, they have eye shadow and blushes and a full line of lipsticks as well.

Quality

I honestly feel that in this category they are equal.  This is a powder makeup with pure mineral pigments and they both products have left my skin feeling great while wearing it and once I have taken it off.

Packaging

The containers have pretty much the same idea with a plastic cover over the makeup, and tiny holes for the powder to be picked up by the brush.  However, bareMinerals does have the better quality container and Avon’s container is lighter and could use a few more holes in the top plastic.

Coverage

Avon has a better coverage with just a few passes of my brush, while when I used bareMinerals I felt like I had to keep putting more of the makeup on for it to make a difference.

Process

The process for Avon is the same as bareMinerals, swirl, tap and buff .  But with Avon there seems to be less makeup to put on and perhaps that has to do with the better coverage factor of the Avon makeup.  When I use bareMinerals I start with a concealer, then the foundation, the bronzer and then the mineral veil.  When I the Avon makeup I use the foundation, blush and then their Transparent Glow.

Brushes

The bareMinerals brushes win this one, hands down.  My Avon kit came with an all over Kabuki brush that felt rough, but it just might need to be broken in.  I have a nice set of bareMinerals brushes and plan on using those for my Avon collection.  If you don’t already have a nice set of makeup brushes I would suggest heading down to Ulta and picking up a nice set.  Mineral makeup is best applied with a good set of brushes and since there are several shades of foundations and a blush that you will be using then you should have a brush for each different product.

Price

The main difference though is the price.  A starter kit for bareMinerals will run you at least $40.00 and up and the Avon kit is only $25.00.

Bottom Line

I feel that the Avon line is a great alternative to bareMinerals and mainly because of the price.  If you are looking to jump into the mineral makeup and want a good place to start then Avon is the way to go.
