Summer Camp Success

Abigail Waiting for Lily to get out of Gadets, Gizmos and Goop Class

Lily has completed 6 weeks of Summer Camp at St. Mary’s School and it was worth every penny.  There were two sessions, each lasting three weeks.  I was nervous at first because each hour she started a new class and needed to navigate her way there.  When she was in Kindergarten the teachers took the entire class from place to place, but now she was kind of on her own to get to the next place.  I did find out the the teachers do help direct them so she did have some guidance.

My biggest annoyance was the stupid Snack Cart that they had set up at recess and lunch recess, Lou dubbed it the “Crack Rack”, it was filled with candy and chips costing anywhere from .10 cents to $1.00. I only gave her .50 cents per day and on one day I did not give her money because her behavior the night before did not warrant the candy ‘reward’.  However a little girl gave Lily $2.00 because she felt bad that Lily didn’t have any candy money and as I recall that was the day that Lily came home with a stomach ache.  I think she learned her lesson that candy is best eaten in moderation.

She took some great classes such as Art Explorers, Dynamic Detective, Gardening, Hip Hop, Legos, Gadgets Gizmos & Goop and Scrapbooking.  She was busy all day and she loved it, this was great practice for her when school starts in a few weeks.  She will be entering First Grade, thank goodness we are done with those stinky 3 hour days of Kindergarten. She is sooooo ready for First Grade even though she will be turning 6 a few weeks after school starts I still believe that we made the right choice to not hold her back a year.

Here are some photos of her time during Summer School.

And here is a video of her Hip Hop class performing for the school.

Lily Graduates from Kindergarten

Wow, what an awesome day. Today Lily graduated from Kindergarten and while at first it seems like this is the ‘end’ of something it is really the beginning it is the is the beginning of her school years. Kindergarten was really just a ‘practice’ for the next 8 years at St. Mary School. It was practice not only for Lily but for our entire family. The Kindergarten years are for Lily to make new friends and get used to the school environment and the school routines.  As a family we had the opportunity to use this year as practice as well with learning about  fundraising activities, volunteer opportunities, where to park, and most importantly what items are hot sellers at the school silent auction and even more important that that is learning when to leave the house so we are not late.

I did not cry when I dropped her off for her 1st day of school last August, but today I held back those tears. The class entered the gymnasium to their “Good Morning” song, which I have heard just about everyday at drop off and I realized that I wouldn’t be hearing that song again because she was leaving behind the fun world of singing songs, coloring and dancing around.   Soon we will be back on campus for Summer Camp but shortly after that she will be in 1st grade where they get down to business with the school work and before we know it we will be at her 8th grad graduation.

I think that this year has taught our family to breath and enjoy the moments because it all goes by so quickly.

Taxi Please

Lily is starting Kindergarten at the end of August and we thought it would be a good idea for her to attend Summer School at her new school so that she could get used to the environment.  We are almost done with the program and she is doing great, but I am the one who has been in an adjustment period.

I had no idea how hard this would be to drop her off and pick her up from school.  At her new school they give every parent a security badge to wear once they have been ‘cleared’ by the office to be on campus.  The badge is actually a yellow card that reads “Taxi Driver”.  On the first day that I got my badge, I thought it was so cute, now I hate it because yes it reminds me that I am fricken Taxi Driver.

Every day I have had to drive her to school by a specific time, not like in Preschool where we could just come and go as we pleased.  No, not when you are in real school, you’ve got to be on time people!  Then I have to occupy myself for 2 hours with Abigail and then it is time to pick Lily up again from school.  My entire morning and early afternoon is built around being her taxi, it is crazy.

There is an afternoon session that she doesn’t stay for and they ring a bell,  holy cow if I am late picking her up I am pretty sure that she would go into category 5 hurricane mode. So every day I get there early and wait….tap tap tap my fingers, check my work email on my phone and get on facebook mobile while Abigail sleeps in the car and I wait for the perfect time to go into the school and pick Lily up…..wait did I mention that I have to actually get out of my car, sign her ‘out’ in the office walk to her classroom and get her?  Oh My GOSH, this is madness and tons of fun when I have to wake up Abigail to do it.

I am almost sad in a way that this is what the next year is going to be  like, my entire days filled with dropping her off and picking her up from school.  Well, at least when she starts Kindergarten she will be in the afternoon class from noon  – 3:00 and this means that we don’t need to rush out of the house or deal with morning traffic.  I will also be able to do the ‘drive through’ lane to pick her up, I don’t need to get myself or Abigail out of the car to pick her up.

So, we are in her last week of Kindercamp and I am really looking forward to it being over, it was a great experience for both of us but dang it I am so exhausted.

Kindergarten Bound

Lily had her Kindergarten assessment with St. Mary School in Sacramento and did great.  As we left the appointment she said “That was fun”.  A few days later we received the good news that she was accepted.  We were a little worried that she may not get in because this is one of the best catholic schools in Sacramento and we are not exactly fully participating in all things Catholic at the moment, but we will be from now on.  I know that by having Lily at this school it will really help our family.  We are excited to be part of a community of people with the same values as we do.

She will actually start this summer in their Kinder Camp program.  For Lily this will be a way for her to get used to the Kindergarten surroundings and make some new friends before the school year starts.

Sisters Art

Before Abigail was born Lily drew many pictures with baby Abigail in them, as well as drawings with our whole family.  She even wrote “Abby” many times on her drawings, it was almost like she was obsessed with her.  Once I got home from the hospital with Abigail I noticed something different about Lily, she had changed.  The change wasn’t necessarily bad, it was just that she was acting different.  She was almost over acting her enthusiasm for Abigail and acting somewhat ‘spazy’.  Her normal actions were louder and bigger and just plain ol’ goofy.  She also didn’t create any artwork with Abigail in it.

I think she was almost uncomfortable having Abigail around.  We had to help Lily understand how to interact with a baby by teaching her things such as using your ‘indoor voice’ and using a gentle touch when playing with her.  Perhaps all these new instructions made her feel a bit out of place in her own home and I can see why many children become jealous of the new baby in the house.  Louis has taken some time off of work so that he can spend time with Lily and Abigail and we have made it a point to do special things with Lily as well.  We also make sure that she is involved and helps us with the baby by getting a diaper, picking out her clothes or helping to feed her.  Lily’s new behavior has tapered off and she is settling back into her own skin.  I know that she is feeling better about having Abigail around because when she came home from Preschool on Wednesday she gave me a new piece of artwork.

St. Mary’s School Here We Come

KWe took the school tour for St. Mary’s School and will be submitting our application for Lily in a few weeks.  We were really impressed with all that the school has to offer.  They have a separate building with rooms for Music, a Science lab (which rivaled the one I had in high school), Chapel, Art, Computer Lab and a Library.  When I went there we sat in one classroom for an entire day, and the Library was in a mobile classroom. They also have a tutoring program, which would have come in handy during my 8th grade math experience.  But the tutor isn’t just for kids who need help with a subject, they are there to help kids who excel in their subjects and need more challenging assignments.

On this day we did not get to see the Kindergartners as they were out on a field trip to the pumpkin patch, which was a little disappointing but at least we got to see their classroom.  I didn’t really like the classroom too much because it seemed small and cluttered but they are moving the classroom next year to the 8th grade classroom which is a lot bigger so that problem is solved.

We were told that they will only be admitting 40 children into Kindergarten next year and 10 of the spots are already spoken for due to siblings already enrolled at the school and they get first priority.   The priority scale after that gets a little tricky and we wind up some where in the middle, probably with the majority of the applicants.  There were about 25 families there for tour, so who knows!  Of course if you are a participating member of the school parish you have a better chance of getting in so guess what I am doing this weekend?  That’s right, headed back to Church with my offertory envelope in hand and I have contacted someone at the church to volunteer my time.

They also do a placement test for the kids in March and I know that Lily will do well on the test, it is just the getting her to do it alone.  She can be a little shy and I don’t want her to freak out that she has to go into the classroom without us and talk to the teacher.  So we are also going to attend as many functions as we can to get her used to the environment at the school.  The next event we will be attending is the Fine Art and Craft Show on November 14th.

The JumpStart Sofware

Ok, I will say it now but you will think I am just bragging but Lily is a computer wiz….but I am sure your kids are too.  I think that it is the coolest thing to see little kids using the computer and knowing what they are doing.  Some adults can’t even figure out how to double click on icon for gods sake.  It just goes to show that out little kids brains are ready to learn anything at this age.

Lily gets on the internet, clicks the icon in the link bar for Playhouse Disney or Noggin and has a ball.  She plays games, she watches videos and I know that she really enjoys it.  Another thing that she likes to do is play her with her JumpStart CD’s.  We purchased theses a few months ago because they have this software at her preschool.  We got a different game than what she uses at preschool but she was complaining that she didn’t get a lot of computer time at school…well not to worry because you should be playing with dirt and your friends at preschool my dear, we can save the computer time for home.  We got her the JumpStart Preschool Bundle pack that had 4 CD’s in it at Target.

A super cool thing that I just found out about is that JumpStart is going to be releasing a game for the Wii called Pet Rescue. I have not yet told this to Lily but when I do I am pretty sure she will pee her pants and be rather happy.  You see, her favorite Leapster game is Pet Pals and she like the JumpStart CD’s and really likes to play on the Wii.  If you want updates about this game check out the JumpStart blog at http://blog.jumpstart.com/

Back to school..again

So since I didn’t pass my Algebra class during the Summer semester, missed it by 8 points…seriously…I am back again at school. It is an online class (thank god) but I had to attend the orientation today on campus. OMG does ever 18 year old girl get a uniform of a coach bag and a jean mini skirt when the graduate high school. I swear I saw enough coach bags for one day, and if we put them all in a pile and burn them we could have a wild fire on our hands. Seriously, can you buy a different bag?? L.A.M.B., Kate Spade, anything but Coach. Need inspiration to finding a new, check out this site where you can rent bags, Bag Borrow or Steal.
I almost puked when I was in the orientation and the instructor was reviewing the syllabus and all of the homework that we have to do. I hope that this time I wont struggle with this math concept and breeze right through it. Hmmm have you tried to do Algebra with a 3 year old wanting to use your eraser and your pencil? Well, that is my fault I should have finished up my AA degree a long time ago, let’s just say about 15years ago when I first stepped onto the prestigious campus of American River College I should have been more of a student and worked my butt off to get my schooling done.
At the time I really didn’t know what I wanted to do, but then about three semesters into school I found Art and Art History. Then I started to actually get good grades and had the ‘idea’ of making it as an artist…well that never happened but I have a lifetime of memories from living in San Francisco and going to art school.

Unfortunately, memories don’t pay the mortgage.
So here I am, working from home as a Virtual Assistant but still wanting more out of life. I want to make more money (don’t we all) so I am planning for the future when Lily goes to school all day long. I will have to go back into the workforce.
Many job postings these days require that you have an AA degree so I am taking those steps to make sure that it is done. I only have to finish up a few requirements and Algebra is one of those crappy requirements, must pass with a “C” or better…so my “D” in Math doesn’t count towards the degree…so here I am back among the Coach bags and mini skirts.
At least Trapper Keepers are still in style!

There's No Crying In Preschool…oh wait a minute…there is plenty!

So Lily has been to preschool now 8 times. At time #6 she displayed a little bit of sadness when I came to pick her up. It wasn’t that she was sad to go, but I was the last mother to pick up her kid and she was getting nervous that I was going to leave her there. No such luck with that one Lily…but we can’t afford a full day for you at Goddard. Anway, when I spoke to her teacher she said that Lily was a little sensitive today…hmmm. Well come to find out that those pesky upper molars were finally coming in so I just thought that was the issue.

Well, it might have been part of the issue but not the whole enchilada. The following time I went to take her to preschool she flipped out, and I mean FLIPPED..Jeff Lewis style. I stayed with her for about 1/2 hour. She was really interacting with her teacher so I know that she enjoys being there. I finally got a moment to leave and off I went. I could hear her screaming from the parking lot. I got home and about 15minutes later the School Owner called me and said that she needed to be picked up..she was having a bad day. That makes two of us.

The next time I took her I ended up staying an hour an half in her classroom. I just could not leave. And I was soooo stressed out becuase #1 I had not yet had my coffee and #2 I had a fricken math test at school in Folsom that I was so nervous about (i.e. math anxiety..grrr hate math…grr). I finally got an ‘ok’ from her as I said that I was going to leave, for about the 12th time. She still cried (loudly) and I told her that I loved her and Daddy would be back to pick her up…soon…very soon as I had been there so long it was almost time for him to pick her up. When Louis picked her up Lily’s teacher said that she calmed down 1/2 hour after I left and was great after that.

The next time we took her (July 2) she flipped out even more. BUT I left her there with her wonderful teacher and she screamed and cried and I could hear her all the way down the hallway. She was screaming “I want Mama, I want Daddy, Please let me go” I got the worst feeling ever when I walked out of there. BUT I knew that I had to do it or I would be spending another two hours there. I had a lab appointment (that I was fasting for) so I had to leave this time! About 1/2 hour after I left the School Owner called me and I got the worst feeling in my stomach. However, he said that she calmed down 3 mintues after I left and she was doing great. When Louis brought her home she was just a bundle of joy. She told me all about her day at preschool.

This is a crazy life.

Catholic School

The big debate will always continue about where a child can get the best education. Let’s work backwards. We want Lily to get into a good college and therefore she will need to go to a good college prepatory high school (ie. St. Francis or Loretto) and how do you get into that type of high school? Well you go to a good catholic grade school. Our conclusion is that she will need to go to catholic school like we did and we will need to join the parish. For the longest time we were aganist sending our children through the catholic school system. However, when we look at it as an educational decision instead of a religous one it becomes clear that we must now take those steps to giving Lily the best education within the catholic system.

You may be asking yourself “But she is only 8 months old, why start planning so soon?” Great question, but can you belive she is 8 months already?? She will be 5 years old before you know it. Time flies by so quickly and it is human nature to keep putting things off until tomorrow. We wanted to be ready with a plan so that we don’t start scrambling about a school decision when she is ready for Kindergarten.

We have made the decision to have her go to St. Ignatius school where all of the Cullo’s went. We did think about going to St. Mary but it just makes more sense to stick wtih St. Ignatus since Mary Ann has such a strong tie to the Parish and School community there.

In looking into our options we have also discovered that with Lily attending a catholic school we will be really involved in her education. Each family must complete ‘hours’ each school year and can also serve as a room parent or on an advisory committee. She will also be in a smaller class size at a catholic school which will help to foster a sense of a close community.

If at anytime Lily experiences problems we will listen to her concerns and try to work them out. If she still isn’t comfortable there we will find a school that will meet her needs.

Lily will be baptised in the coming months so stay tuned for that information.
